Mission jointly organised by Invest Dominica Authority; the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Islands of Guadeloupe and the Chamber of Commerce of Martinique

The workshop to prepare for the Prospecting Mission in Dominica took place on May 31, 2022, organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Islands of Guadeloupe (CCIIG), which is leading the CARO project.

A Multi-Sectoral Prospecting Mission will be held in Dominica from June 13 to 17, 2022 with companies from Guadeloupe and Martinique taking part. The CARO Centre, which is partnering the mission, was invited to present the legal component of the workshop to prepare business owners and give them as much information as possible.

The presentation was made jointly by Marie-Camille Pitton, Secretary General of the CARO Centre, and Maître Christelle Reyno, chief executive of Legalprotech Avocats.

The event, which brought together a panel of diverse speakers, continued with discussions with the delegation of companies from Guadeloupe.

A member of the CCIIG delivered the event's introductory remarks in the presence of Maxime Florent, Dominica's Consul in Guadeloupe. The CCIIG also invited Alain Pierre Renier, a business owner from Guadeloupe who has developed business relations with Dominica for over 20 years.

The speakers and topics covered were as follows:

  • Elcia Gabali, a consultant at GLC International, and Jude Eugène, head of the Business Advice Unit - Economic Action Division - Regional Directorate of Customs and Excise for Guadeloupe, spoke about the transport and logistics aspect.
  • Jean-Paul Lerigab, international trade manager at BNP Paribas Antilles-Guyane, BPI, presented the banking component.
  • Raïssa Goubin Kern, international advisor to the CCIIG, delivered the component on logistics and travel.
  • Marie-Camille Pitton, lawyer and secretary general of the CARO Centre, and Maître Christelle Reyno, lawyer and chief executive of Legalprotech Avocats, were jointly responsible for the section devoted to legal security.

The talk by Marie-Camille Pitton and Maître Christelle Reyno familiarized participants with legal risk, alerting them to (i) the specific characteristics of the legal system in Dominica; and (ii) the advantages of including mediation and arbitration clauses in agreements to anticipate possible future disputes. The business owners took great interest in the presentation, and asked many questions. In light of the substantial need for information about the conditions for investing in Dominica, it was announced that a workshop would be organized in Dominica with members of the Dominica Bar Association to examine the key questions of company, taxation, labour and contract law, etc. in more detail.

The afternoon was set aside exclusively for individual B2B meetings.
