The Chamber of Conciliation and Arbitration of Haiti (CCAH) - an OHADAC partner - is organising a bi-national symposium entitled: “State Justice versus Alternative Justice: Eviction or Synergy?”.

The conference is being organised in the context of the implementation of the Haiti - Dominican Republic bi-national programme (the eleventh FED programme) under the aegis of the Caribbean Export development agency.

The programme provides for the use of arbitration and mediation to resolve disputes that may arise in trade relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The Chamber of Conciliation and Arbitration of Haiti, our partner, and the Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CRC) based in Santo Domingo, signed a Memorandum of Understanding dated October 24, 2017 to advance this part of the programme. The institutions will be responsible for handling dispute resolution procedures against this background.

OHADAC carried out a mission in 2019 to support the programme at the invitation of Caribexport. OHADAC aims to help develop the initiative by making available its extensive network of arbitration and mediation experts in the Caribbean to the above-mentioned Centres for Arbitration. The future OHADAC Centre for Arbitration and Mediation will also be in a position to provide institutional support in the context of these future procedures, for example by appointing an arbitrator from its own panel as necessary.

We welcome the fact that this important event is being organised, and we urge you to follow it given the key issues surrounding the development of alternative dispute resolution methods for the two countries concerned, and more generally for the region.

The colloquium will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Haiti time) via Zoom video-conference.
